To use Azure Connection Monitor to track latency between an Azure virtual machine and an on-premises server (DC1), DC1 must be recognized as an endpoint by Azure. Modern Connection Monitor requires hybrid endpoints to be registered as Azure Arc-enabled servers. This onboarding is accomplished by installing the Azure Connected Machine agent on DC1. Only after DC1 is connected to Azure Arc can the Azure Monitor Agent extension be deployed to perform the connectivity tests. Therefore, the Azure Connected Machine agent is the first and required component to install.
